Important Details About Fitting Vinyl Siding
Vinyl siding should last a long time, and be maintenance free if it goes up properly. Most of our customers have not had the job done before, and they have little idea what to watch for. We publish the most important details about fitting vinyl siding in the public interest. That’s because we believe they should know what they are buying.
The Most Important Detail About Fitting Vinyl Siding
A project is only as good as the foundation we build it on. The support work, and the house-wrap moisture proofing soon vanish from the eye as the vinyl strips go up. Inspect this foundation with the siding contractor, and agree whether it is in good shape or needs tidying up.
More Things to Keep Your Eye On As Siding Goes Up
1… The first strips of vinyl siding must be perfectly level, because the rest builds upon them. Make sure the contractor snaps a line right around the house, and fits the starter strips precisely on that line.
If they press the first strips of siding neatly into them, then your job should be off to a good start. However, we insist our installers recheck levels every five strips, just in case something has shifted.
2… Vinyl siding expands in the heat. If it does not have space to do so, then it will warp or buckle. This is one of the most important details about fitting vinyl siding, yet it’s surprisingly often done incorrectly.
Strips going into corners require space to expand on warm summer days. Our rule of thumb is cut them 1/4″ short (or 1/8″ at both ends). Slippery vinyl will find the slack and take care of the rest.
3… And finally, don’t let a contractor hammer nails into the vinyl and believe they are doing a great job. The material is soft, and flexible which why we leave ours fractionally hanging off the nails.
One last important detail about fitting vinyl siding is having someone do it that knows what they are about. Silverline Exteriors in Port Coquitlam, Vancouver has a team of experienced installers we trained to our own exacting standards that made us a household name.
